Creating a material that purifies water from oil pollution
4:28:57 2023-08-10 1428

Scientists from Russia and Italy have created a new generation of bio-organic compounds that improve the efficiency of water purification techniques from oil products.

A source in the Department of Science and Technology Popularization of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science indicates that the new method relies on strains of oil-destroying bacteria, whose effect is enhanced by humic acids.

Researcher Maria Herzen of Tula University points out that the methods currently used to purify water from oil pollution have many drawbacks, including the risk of secondary pollution, the toxicity of the reagents used and their economic ineffectiveness. Therefore, scientists consider the proposed bioremediation method to be a promising method, in which microorganisms are used to analyze hydrocarbons. But these organisms cannot split all parts of the oil by themselves. Therefore, to increase their effectiveness, Russian researchers suggested adding preparations based on humic acids - popular natural sorbents.

She says: “Innovative bio-organic formulations have a significant impact on the emulsification of various petroleum products: crude oil, diesel fuel and, most importantly, on used synthetic motor oils, which have high toxicity and a low degree of biodegradation -10-30 percent of hazardous waste, which must be collected and recycled. "The formation of bacterial biofilms on the surface of the organic matrix - humic acids, ensures a high degree of hydrolysis of oil and oleoresin hydrocarbons. Changing the bacterial component composition allows monitoring biofilm formation of different structures in the dynamics of splitting petroleum products and selecting more effective components."

It should be noted that researchers from Russian scientific institutions - Tula University, Tula University of Educational Sciences, Mendeleev University of Chemistry and Technology, Petersburg Institute of Technology, as well as researchers from the Italian University of Genoa contributed to this study.
