When the Prophet (s) constructed houses for his wives adjacent to the mosque, some of his companions also built houses there. In addition to having doors opening towards the outside, these houses were designed with doors that opened towards the inside of the mosque, providing a direct entrance to the mosque. By God’s command, the Prophet (s) was instructed to close all the doors except the door of Ali’s house. This event became known as sadd al-abwab or Closing the Doors.3 The event has been cited in many sources.
Upon hearing this commandment, some Muslims expressed complaints. In response, the Prophet (s) stated, “I have been instructed to close all these doors except for the door of Ali’s house. You have spoken about this matter. I swear by God that I did not give any order to open or close a door on my own accord. I have been entrusted with a task, and I have simply carried it out.” According to some hadiths, in response to the objections of his companions, the Prophet (s) emphasized the command by reiterating the Hadith al Manzila.
Given that the Prophet’s uncle Abbas was among those who objected to the closing of the doors, and taking into account that Abbas migrated to Medina after the Conquest of Mecca, it can be inferred that the incident likely occurred after the conquest, around 9/630-31.
