Uncover the secret of changing the color of more than half of the oceans
A study shows that more than half of the world's oceans have taken on a green tinge in the past two decades.
Satellite measurements of ocean surface color over the past 20 years have revealed a global explosion in the growth of phytoplankton, the plant-like microbes common in the upper ocean.
While many of these microscopic organisms, including green algae, absorb carbon dioxide as they harvest solar energy, their flourishing has contributed to an oxygen suffocation that has formed oxygen-depleted "dead zones" around the world.
According to study co-author Stephanie Dutkiewicz, a research scientist and climate representative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), "seeing this actually happen on the ground is not surprising, but it is scary."
"These changes are consistent with human-caused changes in our climate," she said.
The MIT team, in collaboration with the National Oceanographic Center in the United Kingdom, analyzed decades of ocean color data collected by the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Aqua satellite.
The color data, collected from low-Earth orbit, showed that the hotter tropical oceans near the equator are getting steadily greener over time.
The growth of phytoplankton, the basis of the marine food chain that helps sustain krill, fish, seabirds and marine mammals, can be interpreted as a sign of healthy oceans.
