A few months after arriving in Medina, during a covenant of brotherhood, the Prophet (s) declared Ali (a) as his brother. During the establishment of bonds of brotherhood among his companions, Ali (a) found himself without a designated brother. He approached the Prophet (s), saying, “O Apostle of Allah! You have established brotherhood among your companions but left me without a brother.” In response, the Prophet (s) assured him, “You are my brother. Would you not like to be called when I am called … and to enter heaven when I enter?” Ali (a), delighted, replied, “Yes, O Apostle of Allah.” In another account, the Prophet (s) said to Ali (a), “You are my brother, you inherit me, and I inherit you.”
