In many Qur’anic verses and prophetic traditions, faith is closely associated with righteous deeds; for the embodiment of principles can only be realized through actions and stances. Therefore, Muslims — inspired by the spirit of Islam — were the first to break away from the literature of Greek logic which opposed experimentation. They laid the foundations of the experimental method and advanced all aspects of civilized life. They even sought to discover the “philosopher’s stone” and find a way to turn basic metals into gold. In their pursuit of this goal, they uncovered many truths in the field of chemistry.
Today, we are in dire need of closely examining our reality and trying to understand it through our values and conscious human experience, orienting our educational curricula toward addressing its problems and improving it.
What is important today is not that our students memorize pieces of information and certain dates; rather, the important thing is to provide practical avenues that enable students to truly understand the purposes for which they learn. This will not be obvious and convincing unless the student knows how to use the knowledge he has learned when it is needed and how to benefit from it to confront the challenges of reality and to elevate himself. This means that there is an existing need for a kind of practical demonstration of many things that children learn in schools.
The saying “knowledge for action” and the expression “from the university to the factory” need a kind of development today. It is important to prepare the student in a way that enables him to build a better life for himself and his family—by preparing him spiritually, morally, scientifically, professionally, and socially to be a good and active member of his society. In other words, raising his general awareness of the requirements of living in this era, and the will, determination, and qualifications it calls for.
Preparing a young person only to be a productive individual may help improve his financial condition, but the reality is that a good life does not spring solely from material prosperity, but rather from fulfilling one’s duties, being at peace with oneself, and achieving harmony and balance between spiritual and material demands.
Improving the quality of life can only be achieved through spreading a “culture” that carries within it what elevates people's lives by facilitating ways of learning, cultivating, and access to knowledge for everyone. In this context, what the countries of the European Common Market have done is admirable. They completed a massive project that cost five billion European monetary units, by connecting European libraries through the Internet to make two billion and one hundred million books available at the fingertips of knowledge seekers. A quarter of a million specialists work on this network. Some statistics mention that 23% of the peoples of the Common Market regularly access these libraries to benefit from them.
In addition to disseminating knowledge, the focus of young people’s interests must be oriented toward looking to the future and providing them with ideas and knowledge that help them understand it and prepare for it. Some Islamic countries have populations that double every twelve years, and these newcomers need to be integrated psychologically and socially. They need guidance, education, housing, services, and job opportunities — all of which have costs, requirements, and preparations. And although children and youth expect all of this from adults, the truth is that young people must prepare themselves to rely more on themselves and handle their own affairs — which means that they also need more awareness-raising, guidance, and qualification to tackle an era in which living with dignity is becoming increasingly difficult and demanding.
