Shaykh al-Mufid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated in Al-Majalis, with a reliable chain of transmission, from Abdullah ibn Abbas, who said:
Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, and al-Fadl ibn al-Abbas entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) during the illness in which he passed away.
They said, “O Messenger of Allah, the Ansar are in the mosque, weeping. Their men and women are crying over you.”
He asked, “Why are they weeping?”
They replied, “They fear that you will die.”
He said, “Give me your hands.”
He then went out wearing his cloak and a headband until he sat on the pulpit. He praised Allah and glorified Him, then said:
“To proceed, O people! What is so strange about the death of your Prophet? Have I not informed you of my own passing and of your own deaths? If anyone before me had been granted eternal life and then sent for, I would have remained among you forever. Indeed, I am going to meet my Lord.
“I have left among you that which, if you hold firmly to it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah, the Most High, which is before you and which you recite morning and evening.
“Do not compete with one another, do not envy one another, and do not hate one another. Be brothers, as Allah has commanded you.
“I have also left among you my family, my Ahl al-Bayt, and I urge you to treat them with care.
“Then I urge you to care for this living group of the Ansar, for you know their devotion and sacrifices in the sight of Allah, the Almighty and Exalted, His Messenger, and the believers.
“Did they not make room for you in their homes, share their fruits with you, and give you preference over themselves despite their own poverty?
“Therefore, whoever among you is entrusted with authority and has the power to harm or benefit someone, let him accept the good deeds of the Ansar and overlook the wrongdoings of those among them who err.”
This was the last gathering he attended before he met Allah, the Almighty and Exalted.
