Children and respect for parents
11:37:26 2025-04-07 2907

Muslim youth who believe in Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) must know that their fathers and mothers have great rights over them. The Holy Qur'an and many narrations and noble hadiths have placed the rights of parents at the forefront of moral and social rights.

If some fathers and mothers do not respect their children's personalities due to their ignorance, or negligence, or if they sometimes commit injustice against their children, then responsibility calls upon the children to be patient, endure, and avoid retaliation.

Children, no matter what happens and under whatever circumstances must—respect and honor their fathers and mothers. They must not forget their childhood, their weakness, their helplessness, and the hardship their parents endured in raising them.

Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever looks at his parents with a look of hatred while they are unjust to him, Allah will not accept his prayers."

This hadith aims to clarify a son's responsibility toward his parents if he is wronged by one of them. He must ignore this injustice and not view them with hatred in retaliation for the injustice he suffered.

Always remember that your fathers and mothers are merely human beings. They possess good qualities, but at the same time, they also have weaknesses. If their behavior toward you is based on these weaknesses, it is best to be more realistic and consider this normal. Don't forget their good qualities, their love, their compassion, and their constant vigilance for you.

Despite the religious responsibility of parents to respect their children's personalities and treat them as friends with whom they consult and exchange opinions, this should not lead children to become arrogant and to believe that they already know what's best for them, disregarding the guidance and advice of their parents.
