Apple intends to provide the ability to download applications from outside its official App Store, in line with new laws established by the European Union.
According to a new report published by the American Bloomberg Agency, Apple customers within the European Union countries will be able to download applications from outside its official store at some point during the first half of next 2024.
The company's customers will not have to rely entirely on the App Store to obtain applications and games, and developers will also be able to publish their applications in alternative stores without having to pay special fees to Apple ranging between 15% and 30% for each purchase or subscription within the shop.
Some code was spotted in the iOS 17.2 update that Apple is currently working on that refers to the “Sideloading” feature from outside its official store, but Apple is not expected to make this feature available soon, as this update is expected to be released before the end of this year.
The Digital Markets Act (DMA), which entered into force in European Union countries in November last year, requires technology companies to open their services and platforms to other companies and developers.
It is expected that this law will have a significant impact on Apple’s platforms and services, and may lead to Apple making major changes to the App Store, Messages, Siri, FaceTime, etc. It is also expected that these changes will be applied on a global scale, and not just within the European Union countries
