A study determines the best two hours for exercising to lose weight

A new study advises those who go to the gym after work in the evening to adjust their schedules, to get better results in terms of weight loss.

The American study published in the journal Obesity, which was conducted on 5,285 middle-aged adults, showed that exercising between 7 and 9 a.m. was the best time to lose weight.

The study authors found that participants in this category had a lower “body mass index” and a smaller waist circumference, compared to people who exercised in the middle of the day or in the evening.

The researchers claim that "morning exercise may be best, because it is easier to stick to a schedule, and there is less potential for distraction by phone calls, emails, or meetings."

In the study, scientists looked at data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which assesses the health of about 5,000 adults and children in America annually.

They used data from 2003 to 2006, when participants wore fitness trackers - or accelerometers - on their hips, to track exercise for 7 consecutive days.

The study looked at data from tracking devices, dividing the trained participants into 3 groups: morning from 7am to 9am - midday between 11am and 1pm - evening from 5pm to 8pm.

The scientists then collected data on “body mass index” and waist circumference in each of the three groups, to find out which group was less likely to be obese.

The results of the study revealed that the “body mass index” was at its lowest level in the morning group at 25.9 kg/m2, which put them slightly above the healthy range of 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2.

The results were similar between the midday and evening groups, with BMIs of 27.6 and 27.2 kg/m2 respectively, placing them in the overweight range.

While the scientists found that waist circumference was at its lowest in the morning group, which reached 36 inches (91.5 cm), while in the evening group it was 37.4 inches (95 cm), and in the midday group it was 37.7 inches (95.8 cm).

While the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey still uses fitness trackers on the hip, they are now worn on wrists, making comparisons with recent years less reliable.
