There are endless opportunities in every community for you to volunteer, whether it's teaching reading or donating your time to a charity pantry. Anything you can do will not only help the world, but it will also help you. Volunteers feel good about themselves; they feel a sense of purpose, they feel appreciated, and they are less likely to become bored with their lives. Volunteers feel a sense of reward that cannot be achieved any other way. Even if you don't have a lot of time or skills, you can spare an hour a month to dedicate yourself to a good cause.
Bessie, a 70-year-old widow, felt she had more time to spend doing something meaningful—something that would make her wake up with a smile in the morning. Bessie discovered a hospice care program run by the Buffalo Area Community Care Center. This program uses citizens to provide daytime care for children with disabilities.
Bessie joined the center and spends two hours a day playing, reading, talking, and sitting with the children.
A friend of Bessie's who volunteered in the same program says that grandparents who provide care give children "love and care," and in return, they get the reward of seeing the beauty in each one of them. Bessie says, "Volunteering gives me the feeling that I'm doing something good. I'm helping children, innocent people, and myself. Everyone gains, but I always feel like I'm the one gaining the most."
An analysis of a large body of research on the topic shows a strong consensus that volunteering contributes to happiness, by alleviating boredom and creating a greater sense of purpose in life. Volunteers feel twice as happy with themselves as non-volunteers.
