Astronomers prove that Starlink satellites prevent telescopes from space observations
Astronomers have demonstrated that fleets of Starlink and other similar groups of small satellites interfere with the frequencies at which major international radio astronomy laboratories operate.
Cees Bassa, a scientific researcher at the Institute of Radio Astronomy in the Netherlands, said: “Using LOFAR telescopes, scientists were able to detect radio waves at frequencies from 110 megahertz to 188 megahertz sent by 47 satellites out of a total of 68 small satellites. Within this frequency range, radio astronomy observations are achieved. It is dedicated to Astronomy by the ITU MPIfR."
Experts reached this conclusion after confirming the validity of a hypothesis put forward by the International Astronomical Union in February 2022. The hypothesis indicated that fleets of small satellites would not only hinder visual observations and the work of wireless laboratories.
In order to examine the hypothesis, scientists used a network of LOFAR telescopes that were deployed in various regions of Europe. The scientists directed the telescopes to the paths of 64 satellites from the "Starlink" fleet and made sure that they were visible in the radio wave range from 110 to 188 megahertz.
Measurements showed that most of the satellites send well-observed radiation in a few sections of the aforementioned field designated for astronomical observations.
And taking into account the distance of the celestial bodies that scientists sometimes monitor and the weakness of the waves received from them, it can be said that the interference emanating from the satellites can hinder the researchers’ work to an extent.
SpaceX specialists have contacted astronomers to collaborate on steps to reduce the negative impact of satellite interference.
