A time management expert was talking one day to a group of business and commerce students; In order to reach the goal directly, he decided to conduct an experiment in front of them. As he stood in front of a group of outstanding students, saying:
"Okay, it's time for a little test?"
Then he brought a very large jar with a wide mouth and placed it on the table in front of him. Then he placed in it a group of large stones, one of which was the size of a fist.
When the jar was full and there was no more room for any more stones to put inside, the expert asked, "Is the jar full?" Everyone in the class answered yes.
He said: "Is it really?" Then he reached under the table and pulled out a bucket full of pebbles. He poured some pebbles into the jar and began to stir it, until the pebbles found their way in the spaces between the stones; Then he smiled and asked the group again, "Is the jar full?"
At that time, the class replied, "Maybe not!"
“Okay,” he replied, then reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of sand. Sand is poured into the spaces between the stones and pebbles. He asked again, “Is the jar full?” The class shouted, “No!”
And again he said, "Okay!" Then he grabbed a jug of water and started pouring water until the jar was full, then he asked again: "Is the jar full?"
Several students in the class said, "Yes!" The others weren't so sure, and they smiled when the expert took a bottle of salt and emptied it into the jar as well.
Then the expert looked at the class and asked: What is the lesson learned from this experience?
One excited student raised his hand and said: The lesson is that no matter how busy your schedule is, if you try really hard, you can always add a new date to it.
The speaker replied, "No, although that could be a lesson learned too but it's not the lesson I mean. This experience actually teaches us that if you don't put the big stones in first, you can't get them in at all!"
What are the major stones in your life? Do you include a project you would like to complete? Spending more time with your loved ones? Develop your education? your faith? Your physical health, your finances, a cause you believe in?
Whatever it is, you have to identify the big stones in your life, and remember to put them first, or you will never be able to fit them into your life.
