As the Prophet (s) initiated his public mission by calling upon his close relatives, ʿAlī (a) stood by his side. Ibn Isḥāq (d. 151/768) has mentioned the event of inviting prominent Quraysh figures after the revelation of the verse “Warn the nearest of your kinsfolk” (Q 26:214), and this event is known as Yawm al-Indhār (the Day of Warning).2 Following the revelation of the Verse of Warning to the Kindred (inthār al-ʿashīra), the Prophet (s) entrusted ʿAlī (a) with the task of inviting his relatives and providing them with sustenance. Under ʿAlī’s coordination, the ceremony was organized, and invitations were extended to the Prophet’s relatives, which included Abū Ṭālib (a), Ḥamza b. ʿAbd al Muṭṭalib, ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and Abū Lahab. During the ceremony, after the meal was served, the Prophet (s) began inviting his relatives to Islam. However, due to objections raised by Abū Lahab, the gathering came to an abrupt end. Once again, the Prophet (s) instructed ʿAlī (a) to organize another gathering, with the same individuals in attendance. During this second gathering, the Prophet (s) presented his call to Islam and made the following statement: “Who among you will support me in this matter [the propagation of the religion], so that he may be my brother, my vicegerent, and my successor among you?” As everyone remained silent and refrained from responding, it was ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (a) who stepped forward and declared his readiness to support the Prophet (s). The Prophet (s) placed his hand on ʿAlī’s neck and proclaimed, “Verily, this individual is my vicegerent and successor among you. Therefore, obey him and heed his words.” In a mocking manner, the participants turned to Abū Ṭālib and laughed, saying, “He [= the Prophet (s)] is instructing you to listen to your son and obey him.”
