During the descent of revelation upon the Prophet (s), ʿAlī (a) was there along with him inside the Cave of Hira. In the Sermon of Disparagement (al-Khuṭbat al-Qāṣiʿa), Amīr al Muʾminīn (a) states: “Every year he [the Prophet (s)] would retreat to Mount Ḥirāʾ for prayer, where no one but I saw him … I heard Satan’s cry when revelation descended on the Messenger, and when I asked, “What is this cry?” he answered me, ‘This is Satan, who now despairs of being worshipped. You see what I see and hear what I hear, ʿAlī, though you are not a Prophet (s), but my vizier, and on the path of virtue’.”
In Sunni historical and hadith sources, there is a divergence of opinions regarding the age at which ʿAlī (a) embraced Islam or his position among the early Muslims. According to various sources, there are indications that ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (a) may have embraced Islam at some point between the ages of 7 and 16. In his examination of the age at which ʿAlī (a) embraced Islam, al-Masʿūdī (d. 346/957) presents a perspective suggesting that he was five years old when he embraced Islam. Al-Masʿūdī hints at political and sectarian motivations behind this view, stating that “this is the view of those who aim to diminish the virtues and merits of him [=ʿAlī (a)]. [They proposed the view] to portray his conversion to Islam as an action of a young child who may not distinguish between truth and falsehood, doubt and certainty.” Some suggest that he converted to Islam between 10 and 12. However, considering that he was born in 599 and the Prophetic mission commenced in 610, it can be inferred that his age at the beginning of the Prophetic mission was approximately 11.
There is also a dispute regarding ʿAlī’s position among the early individuals who embraced Islam. While there is a quote attributed to the Prophet (s) addressing ʿAlī (a) and stating “you are the first person who believed in me,” certain sources attempt to present Zayd b. Ḥāritha or Abū Bakr as the first Muslim. It is worth mentioning that the majority of these narrations are transmitted through the accounts of Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī (d. 96/714) and Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī (d. 124/742). However, according to certain accounts, Abū Bakr embraced Islam after a group of fifty individuals had already converted. In several hadiths, Imam ʿAlī (a), identifies himself as the first Muslim. This is mentioned in several of his sermons. As one sermon states, “In those days Islam did not exist in any house except that of the Prophet of Allah and his descendants and Khadīja, while I was the third after these two.”
