People are happiest when they allow their individuality to shine through, not when they conform to stereotypes. Men who think they should act tough, and women who think they should act soft, are trapping themselves in expectations that have nothing to do with their true selves. Look at a funeral, and you’ll see women crying and men with sullen faces. Men have been taught how to be tough and not express their emotions, and women have been taught how to be more open and expressive. The National Institutes of Health has documented that when it comes to physical and emotional pain, men are less likely than women to disclose their discomfort. It’s important to remember that not all of us fit these expectations. A man who tends to cry at a funeral and restrain himself because he’s been taught to be tough isn’t really tough. He claims that as others expect, a woman who longs to express herself to others, but acts in a more conservative way to suppress her feelings and curb her emotions, will not be happier acting in an unnatural and unfeeling way.
You should act in the way you think is appropriate, not in the way you think men or women are supposed to act. Generalizations about men and women are often false and distorted.
