Reprimand: Refers to issuing criticism or warning to someone for inappropriate or unacceptable behavior. A reprimand involves a stern warning of the potential negative consequences of a person's behavior, and is often used to correct unacceptable behavior.
If a lazy student is blamed and reprimanded in front of his classmates, this will degrade his personality and hurt his self-esteem and dignity. The policy of blame and reprimand cannot be effective in reforming a lazy student. Moreover, humiliation and insult have the opposite effect, which may push the lazy and backward student to show more stubbornness and make him more daring to continue his bad behavior.
Reprimanding a guilty student in the educational environment is considered a major educational mistake that carries negative effects, and the biggest mistake is in repeating blame and excessive reprimanding; because that eliminates the psychological impact that reprimanding leaves in the student's soul on the one hand, and pushes the young man who is exposed to reprimand to stubbornness and revenge on the other hand.
There is a very big mistake, which is to unjustly reprimand an innocent student in front of his colleagues. If the teacher does not take the initiative in such a case to correct his mistake and save the dignity of the student that he has wounded in front of the rest of the students, he will have committed the greatest educational betrayal and turned a competent, diligent student into a dangerous member of society.
If those in charge of schools and educational centers relied on the method of advice instead of reprimand and scolding, and sought to alert the lazy and negligent student with all politeness and kindness, this might reflect positively on the student’s soul, and the student would try with all determination to reform his situation. There is no doubt that the effect would be more significant if the advisor proceeded to give advice to the negligent and lazy student away from the eyes of others; because advice in public is expensive, and may lead to wounding the individual’s dignity and destroying his personality.
