Serving others

There are many different ways to provide service to others varying from helping someone carry their groceries to their car to serving dinner to your guests.

By serving people, you are bettering your character the character of those around you; people say that one act of kindness leads to another one.

in this article, we want to focus on a specific type of service. The service that is found in only one place for a specific period.

Serving others is a beautiful act that is commended in all cultures and religions around the world as it is not only an ethical topic but also a religious one.

The Bible says everyone is called to serve God by serving others.

“You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.” (Galatians 5:13)

We are not saved by serving, but we are saved for serving. The Apostle Paul gives insights related to this:

The basis for serving others is salvation. Paul says, “You were called to be free.” You cannot serve God until you’ve been set free by Jesus. It’s the prerequisite for serving.

Also, the motive for serving is love. Paul says, “Serve one another in love.” This is an important key to building community.

Service to others is a very important part of making a community. By helping and serving others, you are allowing the respect between others and yourself to grow.

This growing respect allows the community to thrive and grow stronger. Therefore, service to others is an extremely important part of a community.

In Arbaeen, we witness this strong community coming all together to serve the pilgrims of Imam Hussein.

The community consists of people from different backgrounds, faiths and social classes.

The servants of Imam Hussain (AS) do not hold back when serving the pilgrims. They offer all they have without thinking twice of weather they are doing the right thing because there is no doubt, that whatever they are doing is the right thing referring back to the Holy Quran and narrations by the Ahlul-Bait, Peace Be Upon Them.

When the pilgrims come for arbaeen, they don’t have to worry about anything that they would usually have concerns about.

The servants make sure that all the needs are provided ranging from food, drink, medical care, accommodation and even massages.

It is evidently seen that their only motive is to provide the visitors of imam with the best types of meals and the best types of drinks while ensuring that there are food caters for all cultures and backgrounds. They do this to ease the journey of the visitors and the ones who walk.

They also open all their homes in honor of the visitors and allow them to shower and rest and even wash their clothes before they set off for the remainder of their journey.

It's a surprise to many that even massages are provided to treat any sort of aches and pains and to relax the pilgrims and allow them to concentrate on their goal of reaching the Holy Shrine of aba abdillah.

The service to Imam Hussein’s pilgrims has been stressed upon in many traditions and narrations.

The Messenger of Allah said: Whoever quenches the thirst of a believer with water, Allah will give the giver 70 thousand hasana (good deed) for every sip.”

Volunteers serve the pilgrims without expecting any reward or gain in return. Instead, they see the reward of that service is given to them in this life as well as the afterlife by the Imam himself.
