Parental follow-up in the socialization of the child

One of the most important things that a child needs - due to his lack of experience in social life - is guidance based on sincerity so that there is mutual acceptance between him and society. Such guidance can only be provided by two parents who conceived this child willingly.

The child feels the need for someone to guide him, give him insight for life, and answer his many questions that cause him confusion, as well as his bias toward certain types of behavior for which he is rewarded and his intimidation from other types of behavior for which he is punished. He then discovers their harms, so he knows his way, and the ambiguity that surrounds situations disappears. This appears in the stage of youth, when authority embraces the parents and he remains in his conscience someone who is directed according to the values, habits and ideas he has acquired to be on the right path. Or his conscience is empowered to exercise authority over his behavior, and he deviates from the right path.

Parental care and guidance - especially on the part of the mother - for the child is what ensures proper growth and ensures reaching the best level of physical and psychological development. Satisfying this need requires the parents to surround their child with their love and care, while the absence of the mother due to death, separation, or working conditions, have a bad impact on the child’s life.

In the countryside, parents rarely discuss their personal problems and difficulties with their children. In addition, the rural family often resorts to corporal punishment whenever the child makes a mistake, and this method is widespread in the countryside, while reprimanding the wrongdoer and informing him of his mistake is a widespread method in the city.

The cultural, social and economic changes that have occurred in the Egyptian countryside in recent times have led to an increase in awareness among many parents regarding their children and their keenness to follow up and guide them, especially the learners.

Parental follow-up of the child is one of the aspects of education, and through education the child acquires the basic values and the first pillars for building himself and his personality within the family environment. On the one hand, the family represents the culture of society in general, and on the other hand it represents the subculture to which it belongs in particular. The family was and still is the most powerful weapon that society uses in the process of social normalization and the transfer of heritage from one generation to the next. Through it, the individual learns compliance, obedience, and integration into the society’s culture and following its traditions. Through it, there is follow-up of the child, taking care of him, and illuminating the path before him with direction and guidance at times and punishment at other times.

Some family problems may lead to the parents neglecting the child and not following up on him, such as the illiteracy of the parents or one of them, or some crises arising from the absence of one of the spouses, or the disorders that arise from the long illness of the breadwinner to the point that he is unable to work and earn, which leads to the collapse and disintegration of the family, and thus all these factors hinder the path to proper socialization of the child.

The educational level of the parents also affects their follow-up of their children. Educated parents, or one of them, are more interested in following up on their children, making sure to apply for them in nurseries and schools, paying their fees, asking about their academic conditions, and directing them, unlike if the parents are illiterate and ignorant of matters of raising and following up on the child.

The family must provide its children with the means of education, development, and care. The family is the only environment in which children can be raised as good Muslims, and no other social organization can play the role of the family in shaping the child’s personality and monitoring him in the first years of his life at least.
