People and leisure time

George Lundberg says in his book “Unemployment”:

Unemployment days are days in which we are free from the most important duties for which we receive wages or those imposed on us. Unemployment came as a result of the development of inventions that reduced human work.

“In the year 1840, the weekly working hours for an individual amounted to about 84 hours, and in the year 1930 they were reduced to 50 hours or less, and now the weekly working hours have been reduced in many countries of the world to 40 hours, and it is possible that they will be reduced to less than that”.

In past eras, people considered work to be the main focus and main goal of social life, while entertainment was a secondary matter in their opinion that did not necessarily have to be done, because work at that time was done by hand and with limited human energy, and as a result the level of production was not abundant, which required people to exert More bid to get more production.

Increase leisure hours:

Engineers have long contributed to creating a major transformation in the field of automated industries that has had an impact on the lives of the people of industrialized countries. On the one hand, most of the machines and machinery have become automated and there is no longer room for labor to work. As a result of this transformation, the worker is no longer exhausted during his working hours. He gains some of his strength, and when the time comes to leave work, the worker eagerly leaves his work environment, searching for something to amuse himself with, and frees his strength, of which nothing has been diminished, in what brings him pleasure and enjoyment. On the other hand, the changes that industries underwent contributed to the speed of machine operation and the high level of production. As a result, the working hours of the workforce decreased and their leisure hours increased.

The mechanization of machinery and the increase in leisure hours and unemployment played a role in the rise in crime rates and the emergence of many obstacles and problems facing the developed industrial countries. Sociologists are still researching and thinking about what can fill people's leisure hours, how they spend their idle time, and what are the ways to ensure that people do not become deviant and corrupt, and thus become miserable and miserable as a result of their leisure time.

Crimes in so-called developed countries:

“The late Prime Minister of India, Nehru, said: One of the most important issues that we face today, and that the United States of America and other economically developed countries will face during the next few years, is the issue of leisure hours and unemployment. In developing countries, such as India, for example, this issue seems to be less important than it is in the United States and Europe, especially in the Scandinavian countries. It is more severe in America than in any other country, and it seems that it is headed toward further aggravation in the future. We all read articles and articles in international newspapers about corruption and crimes among the younger generation and the deterioration of moral principles in rich countries and affluent societies. In order to confront this situation resulting from the increase in people’s leisure hours, what should we do? The answer to such a question is of great importance, because if we do not address it accurately and properly, a kind of moral decay will prevail in civilization itself”.

“When you find a way out of the unemployment issue, you will see yourself facing a more difficult issue, which is how to utilize your free time. As long as a person works and strives to survive, whether this work is hard as it is in our countries or easy as it is in some developed countries, he is busy. But when its social and economic issues are solved and the development of industries contributes to lifting great burdens from its shoulders, we will undoubtedly face new problems that we have never faced before, such as youth crimes, rapes, increased murder, widespread addiction to alcohol abuse, rebellion by destructive forces, chaos, and hundreds of germs and other microbes that cause... All of them are psychological illnesses and moral degeneration.

Life issue:

“Samuel King” says: The decrease in human working hours in recent years has made the issue of entertainment, or what a person does during his free hours of activity, a vital social issue that has captured the attention of most researchers and social investigators. Studies conducted by these researchers and investigators indicate that imbalances will occur in a person’s life and personality as long as he is unable to utilize his increasing free time rationally. Man was naturally inclined to have more free time, but today he feels the danger resulting from his failure to comprehend his increasing free time, and he fears that his inability to utilize this time properly will lead to the emergence of dangers that threaten him and his society, and from here the issue of dictating free hours and unemployment has become The most complex issue for most countries in the world, especially Western ones”.
