Cooperative communication

Imagine for a moment a familiar scenario. It is late afternoon. Your baby is napping while still in his crib. You are in the kitchen preparing for dinner and the evening that awaits you. Suddenly, you hear your baby crying. What do you do? Well, most mothers instinctively head towards the bedroom to find out what's going on. Perhaps your son just woke up expecting to be held and spoiled! Maybe he's hungry or wet! Or perhaps he had a fever while he was sleeping and now feels tired!

Maternal instinct kicks in when you hold your son and look at him. Although your family's signals are broken from time to time, most of the time you know what to do. Caring parents and their children enjoy what researchers call cooperative communication, and this communication appears to be the most important building block in brain development and secure attachment, as well as being one of the few educational skills we find in all known civilizations.

Suppose something hinders this process. Suppose that the sound of the television prevents you from hearing your child crying, or perhaps you are depressed and tired and do not feel any desire to walk to your son’s room to see what is going on. You may think he is hungry when in reality he is wet, or you may not have noticed that he has a fever or a rash. In this case, you will not be able to meet the child's needs, and this is not cooperative communication. No mother is perfect! You will receive the wrong message from time to time, no matter how hard you try. However, as long as your son learns that you listen to him and care about him, and that you will do your best to meet his needs, he will grow and succeed.

• Facts

Cooperative communication means that the child's signal is received and that the mother responds to it appropriately. When communication between mother and child is based on interest, the child grows and his relationship with his parents becomes stronger. Listening to your child and responding to him are the most important things you can do for him.

Since girls are ahead of boys in terms of developing emotional and social skills, it is necessary for you to listen to your son, touch him, talk to him, and communicate with him. He needs a relationship with you in order to become a happy and productive young man.
