Iraq is able to meet only 15 percent of its water needs in 2035
A United Nations report warns of an arid Iraq, indicating that it will only be able to meet only 15 percent of its water needs in 2035 if current trends continue.
The British newspaper, The National, stated in a report that "90 percent of the rivers in Iraq are polluted, while seven million people in the country suffer from limited access to clean water," while Jeanine Plasschaert, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, said to Security Council "This is an important multiplier of threats to Iraq's stability."
"Plasschaert stressed the importance of the need to view water as a common concern among Iraq's neighbors due to water scarcity in the region and not a resource that is being competed for between upstream and downstream countries," noting that "bold local measures and close regional cooperation provide the only solution." for peaceful coexistence in the region.
"By 2035, it is estimated that Iraq will have the capacity to meet only 15 percent of its water needs, while the Iraqi government should be urged to intensify diplomacy with its neighbors on issues including water sharing, border security, trade and climate issues," the report said.
A report by the Red Cross had confirmed earlier that "climate change and armed conflicts have caused a terrible humanitarian situation throughout the region," while the Iraqi deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Sarhad Fattah, confirmed Baghdad's keenness to engage in water diplomacy to secure the legitimate right of Iraqis to their share of that vital resource.
