Does tea and coffee increase thirst in Ramadan?

A Turkish nutritionist warned that excessive tea and coffee increases thirst during the day in Ramadan. She also warned against a lot of fatty, salty and sugary foods, because they increase the feeling of thirst during fasting as well.

Pinar Sokolmaz Kaya, head of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ondokuz Mais University in Samsun, northern Turkey, made some recommendations for fasting people.

She stressed that the balance of water and fluids in the body must be maintained during the month of Ramadan, pointing out that some people confuse the need for water with the need for fluids.

She added, "Consuming fluids does not mean drinking water. It is useful not to consume more than one cup of coffee per day, and not to exceed 3-4 cups of instant coffee."

She said, "Since it causes fluids to be excreted from the body, the daily need for water increases and the person will feel thirstier, tired and fatigued during the day."

The Turkish expert also recommended not to overdrink tea, given that it has a diuretic property.

"When we consume a lot of tea at suhoor, our body may become dehydrated during the day," she said.

She pointed out that it should be noted that tea is a diuretic and causes water to be excreted from the body, and thus the feeling thirsty.

And she stated that tea can be drunk while exchanging conversations with the family after iftar, provided that it is not excessive.

She also warned against eating excessively salty and fatty foods, and stressed that light foods such as eggs, cheese and tomatoes should be eaten at suhoor.

She noted that excessively salty and sugary foods increase the need for water.

She explained that the body will need more water to maintain a balance between cells, and that the water we drink at Suhoor may not be enough during the day.
