The discovery of a giant marine organism 100 million years old.
Australian paleontologists have discovered in the Queensland desert a complete skeleton of an ancient marine reptile, about 100 million years old.
Researchers from the Queensland Museum confirmed that the ancient "plesiosaur", which was discovered in a remote area, could help solve mysteries related to the evolution of organisms on Earth.
"We were so excited when we saw this fossil," said Espen Knutsen, chief scientist at the Queensland Museum, in a statement. It's like a Rosetta Stone for marine paleontology because it may hold a key to revealing the diversification and evolution of long-necked plesiosaurs in Cretaceous Australia."
"It's the first known head and body of the Australian Ilasmosaurus, a dinosaur-era plesiosaur that roamed during the early Cretaceous period. It lived in the Eromanga Sea, which covered most of Australia's interior from 140 million to 100 million years ago," Knutsen added.
