Intolerance is greatly known for bringing out the worst and most despicable crimes humans have ever known to commit. Wars, atrocities, racial and religious prejudice, family violence, and other notorious acts all share a common feature—intolerance. It was Satan’s downfall of Allah’s grace. Satan could not tolerate Adam or Allah’s command to show respect towards Adam. Everyone is guilty of this at one point in their lives. Someone could be intolerant towards their parents, children, a certain opinion, the poor and even towards the disabled. All of our infallible Imams possess the trait of tolerance, but one Imam stood out the most. Imam al-Kadhim, the seventh imam of Ahlul-Bayt is known for his exceptional level of tolerance.
All of us experience situations and circumstances that test our tolerance, during these experiences one should consider what the Imam would do. Imam Musa Al-Kadhim was named Kadhim because he was the epitome of tolerance. Al-Kadhim means the one who holds his temper and controls his anger. The Imam (AS) used the Prophet (PBUH) as his role model, which inspired him to combat difficult situations with love, peace, understanding, and forgiveness.
In order to be tolerant one should have a very positive outlook towards the people around them. They treat others as humans with honour and dignity. He preached the message of Allah with tolerance and without judgement.
In the Holy Quran Allah states “And not alike are the good and the evil. Repel (evil) with what is best, when lo! he between whom and you was enmity would be as if he were a warm friend.”
One day Imam Kadhim was passing by the tent of a peasant Nomad. He went up to him and said, “Salam-Alaikum,” in a warm and friendly manner.
Upon leaving he said good-bye to him in a very kind manner with these words, “If there is anything I can do for you, I’m more than willing to do it.”
One of the followers of the imam who saw this attitude said, “Is it suitable for you, the son of the messenger of Allah, to sit and talk with a man of no reputation and make such an offer as, ‘if you need me in any work, I’m more than willing to do it’? Is it right for a man of great dignity to talk to a man like that?”
The imam replied, “This is one of Allah’s creatures. Allah has created all men equal. Besides, as a Muslim, he is our brother in faith. After all, life does not remain the same forever. One who needs help today may be the one who will be able to help us tomorrow when we need help! If we don’t pay any attention to him today, one day when we may need him and we will be embarrassed to ask him for help.”
An individual who truly follows the teachings of Ahlul-Bayt is tolerant regardless of the circumstance they’re put in. Islam has always guided us toward politeness and tolerance. Islam has told us to be gentle and tolerant to the people even if they are harsh.
Prince of the Believers Imam Ali (AS) has said “Beauty of relationships is in tolerance, if you start looking for flawless people, you’ll find yourself alone in the end.” He (AS) has also said “You should therefore put out the fires of haughtiness and the flames of intolerance that are hidden in your hearts. This vanity can exist in a Muslim only by the machinations of Satan, his haughtiness, mischief and whisperings.”
With this we pray that may Allah help us be tolerant and kind towards others.
