A term used by some SOCIOLINGUISTS, in the study of the development of CREOLE LANGUAGES, to refer to a linguistic VARIETY (or LECT) most remote from the prestige language (the ‘matrilect’ or ACROLECT). Basilectal varieties are also contrasted with the intermediate varieties, known as MESOLECTS.
