Parenting is a delicate responsibility that involves raising children and supporting their intellectual development. Mastering this role requires respecting the individuality of the child, relying on parental instincts, and understanding the stages of development that characterize childhood. Such knowledge helps parents distinguish between what is normal and what may be a cause for concern at each age. Proper parenting also means helping the child develop self-confidence and understand the meaning behind their own behavior.
Parents who expect too much from their child—such as learning to read at the age of three or four—fail to respect the developmental needs of that stage, one of the most important being the need to play. Play is the most appropriate and effective way for a child to learn before entering school.
Follow Your Child's Development
Some children progress steadily, alternating naturally between calm periods and phases of excitement that accompany each developmental milestone. Others follow a more irregular and challenging path, encountering several obstacles along the way. Nevertheless, there are important developmental signs and milestones that should never be overlooked. These begin to emerge around the age of eighteen months, when the child gradually gives up breastfeeding, gains greater independence, and starts developing a distinct personality.
At eighteen months, children often become highly determined to assert their independence and may strongly resist their mother's requests. Since words alone have little influence at this stage, they express themselves primarily through actions and behavior. Mothers should not expect much cooperation during this period and should instead respond with firmness, consistency, and prompt action.
The second year of life is generally considered a period of temporary stability. During this stage, children acquire language skills that enable them to express most of their wishes, and a greater sense of cooperation develops between the child and those around them.
Around the age of two and a half, however, a more difficult phase often begins. Children at this age may seem impossible to manage. They are constantly active and energetic, requiring close supervision and attention. They often display contradictory behavior: as soon as one request is fulfilled, they immediately demand something else. They tend to be possessive, controlling, and resistant to change. The most effective way to deal with children at this stage is through diplomacy and gentle suggestions. For example, a mother might say, "Would you like to put your building blocks away?"
This stage is followed by what is often described as the "angelic phase," which occurs around the age of three. At this age, children's greatest desire is to please others. They become more affectionate, cooperative, gentle, and emotionally expressive.
Throughout childhood, children experience many emotional changes that contribute to the development of their personality and independence. They may shift from sadness to happiness, from stubbornness to flexibility, and from inconsistency to emotional stability. Eventually, they reach what is often referred to as the "golden age" of around ten years old, when they are generally cheerful, self-confident, sociable, and emotionally balanced.
In conclusion, mothers should accept that every child develops naturally at their own pace and occasionally needs relief from pressures in different areas of life. A mother's role is to guide her child toward the best path and the most positive behavior. In doing so, she will find both satisfaction and appreciation in fulfilling this important responsibility.
