Alternative approach to pragmatism/authoritarianism
7:48:49 2025-03-05 1165

Practical people are usually strong-willed, so they become controlling and domineering, trying to impose their opinions and plans on others. They appear completely reserved and only accept their ideas. When they switch to the alternative style, they may show less emotion than usual, and their eyes have a stern look that indicates determination, but may not reflect more than this. The practical person does not pay much attention to gestures, and when he resorts to the alternative style, he tends to take a strict position. He may focus all his gestures on using the index finger to point in an affirmative manner. His voice in this case may be loud and hoarse, or he may speak in a calm and authoritative voice like the assertive character of Clint Eastwood. In defence of their alternative approach some pragmatists might say: "I am certainly a bit authoritarian when I am under pressure, but at least I do not let the pressure get the better of me. A reprieve must be taken, and I am sure it must be taken. I see no reason to apologize for this." Others, however, may regret having been arrogant and intimidating.

No one likes the unyielding insistence of pragmatists in the alternative approach, their protest that their goals have been achieved, their plans have been implemented, their schedule has been followed, and their ideas have been accepted. The ideas put forward in this case are usually unsound, and even when they are sound, the authoritarian and insensitive manner in which the pragmatist announces his plan usually raises enough objection to make the plan fail.

Other pragmatists sometimes condone authoritarian methods when under pressure, and expressives often understand the pragmatists' insistence (even if they do not like it). But they often reject the unemotional façade that pragmatists display when they switch to the alternative style, and the expressive attitude is: (If you are upset, say so. Don’t cover your anger with this practical façade of facts and figures.)

Less assertive people are often intimidated by the pragmatists’ methods, which they see as threatening, when they use the alternative style, and they refuse to be moved or controlled by the pragmatists. The naturally impulsive pragmatist tends to decide and act more quickly when they use the alternative style, which puts a heavy burden on the slower styles, and the pragmatists’ increased focus on tasks and thus less on people, is one of the most worrying things for the friendly.
