It is not what happened that matters, but how you think about it

There is no objective way to tell you whether you are having a good life, a good day, or a good hour. Your life is a success based solely on your own judgment.

I asked people from opposite sides of the spectrum to read a newspaper article carefully, and I looked at their reactions and their positions on an issue. I noticed that both sides thought the article was biased against their position, and it is not logical for the article to be biased against two opposing positions. Obviously, the content of the article is not the cause of this reaction, but the people’s perspective is. Life events have a similar effect. The same event can be viewed positively or negatively, depending on how you view it.

Knowing whether someone has faced a personal setback or a personal victory is not as good a predictor of how satisfied that person is with their life as knowing how that person views the causes and consequences of those events.
