Internet addiction is a serious issue. Addiction is a medical condition, defined as a strong, uncontrollable need to take something or carry out a particular activity.

Why does it happen?

We all love our tech. Our smartphones, tablets and computers make our lives easier and more entertaining, but it is possible to love them too much. A 2014 study by a marketing agency found that about 16% of 18- to 25-year-olds are involved in compulsive internet use, which could lead to addiction.

Sleep deprivation and FOMO

Even if you are not addicted to the internet, it might still be worth taking a look at your internet habits and check you are getting enough sleep...

We've all been there - you know your alarm will go off early, but you want to stream just one more episode of your favourite new show before going to bed. The occasional late night should be fine, but over time a lack of sleep can lead to you feeling grumpy and stressed and affect your overall health.

It has even been suggested that the blue light from smartphones and tablets suppresses the production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin. So it's important to avoid screens just before bed time or they could affect your sleep.

Also, it is perfectly normal to want to know what everyone is up to, and to experience some level of FOMO (fear of missing out). But if you find you are feeling anxious or can't get to sleep because you need to constantly check your social media accounts then you need to let it go. You can’t spend every minute checking what other people are doing. Just remember that people try to make their lives seem brilliant on social media – in real life it may not be as exciting as it looks.

Types of Internet addiction
Being addicted to the internet could mean different things, including:

  • Gambling addiction
  • Gaming addition
  • Social media addiction
  • Shopping addiction

How do I know if I’m addicted?

If you find you’re neglecting other parts of your life, such as seeing your family and friends, then you could be addicted. If you find you are online so long that you are not taking care of yourself, such as eating and sleeping properly, it’s time to make a change. Physical symptoms of internet addiction include:

  • Backache
  • Headaches
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Disturbances in sleep
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (a tingling sensation, numbness and sometimes pain in the hand and fingers)
  • Blurred or strained vision

If you’re addicted to something then when try to stop you will feel withdrawal symptoms. These could include including feelings of discomfort, distress or an intense craving to go online. You’re more likely to be affected if a family member is already addicted, or if you have undergone stress earlier on in your life.

What should I do?
You’re not alone. Addiction is a treatable condition – and you can and should seek help. You could see your GP for advice or contact an organisation that specialises in helping people with addictions. Friends and family can help by re-introducing you to your interests outside of the internet, encouraging you to see a GP or seek counselling, and then being supportive during treatment.
