Halides, oxohalides and complex of group 16
 

    In contrast to the trend found in earlier groups, the stability of the lowest oxidation state (‏2) of the central atom in the halides of the group 16 elements decreases down the group.  This is well exemplified in the halides discussed in this section. Our discussion is confined to the fluorides of O, and the fluorides and chlorides of S, Se and Te. The bromides and iodides of the later elements are similar to their chloride analogues.
