gradience (n.)

A term used by some LINGUISTS to refer to areas of LANGUAGE where there are no clear boundaries between sets of analytic categories. PHONETIC continua provide clear examples (such as the set of possible CONTRASTS between FALLING and RISING INTONATION patterns), but the term is also found in SEMANTICS (as in the study of continua, such as color terms, or GRADABLE ANTONYMS) and in GRAMMAR (where the boundaries between WORD-CLASSES are not clear-cut; e.g., noun-like words such as rich, London, smoking, someone make it difficult to circumscribe the class of NOUNS).
