downgrading (n.)

A term used by some LINGUISTS to refer to a GRAMMATICAL process in which a UNIT in the grammatical HIERARCHY is EMBEDDED within a unit from a lower LEVEL. For example, the clause I don’t care is used as the equivalent of a WORD in the SENTENCE That’s a very I-don’t-care attitude; it has thus been downgraded (compare the notion of RANK shift).
