A term used in COMPARATIVE PHILOLOGY, and sometimes in PHONOLOGY, to refer to a type of INTRUSION, where an extra VOWEL has been inserted between two CONSONANTS; a type of EPENTHESIS. Anaptyctic vowels are also known as parasite vowels or svarabhakti vowels (the latter term reflecting the occurrence of this phenomenon in Sanskrit). An example is the pronunciation of film as in some dialects of English.
