All of the constructions we have discussed have at least one thing in common: they all involve one clause embedded within another. These embedded clauses may have several different functions. A complement clause is one that functions as an argument of its matrix verb. An adverbial clause functions as an adjunct to the matrix clause. A relative clause functions as a modifier within an NP, and this NP in turn will (in most cases) function as a constituent of some larger clause.
As we noted, subordination is a very broad and complex area of syntactic research. This topic has provided a basic introduction to the kinds of issues that are likely to be significant for any preliminary study of the subordinating constructions in a particular language. In describing these constructions, we need to address their internal structure (e.g. the form of the subordinate verb, choice of complementizer, word-order constraints, presence vs. absence of a subject NP). We also need to address their structural and functional relationship to the matrix clause (position within the larger sentence, complement vs. adjunct or modifier, semantic functions, etc.). Finally, we should look for any correlations between these external and internal features.
Some additional features are significant for describing relative clauses: the position of the head noun; the strategies available for marking the relativized function (most commonly the gap strategy, relative pronouns, or pronoun retention); and any restrictions on what Grammatical Relations may be relativized.
