INTERACTIVE COMPENSATORY HYPOTHESIS
A theory that in reading there is a trade-off between the quality of the information achieved by decoding and the extent to which the reader needs to make compensatory use of contextual information. Thus, a weak reader who is a bad decoder is more heavily reliant upon contextual information because he/she has need of it in order to compensate for words which have not been recognised. If a text is degraded (through small print or bad handwriting), then even a skilled reader may rely upon top-down information to fill gaps in the message.
The interactive compensatory hypothesis has been extended to the situation of the foreign language reader. Here, the premise is that those with a more elementary knowledge of the syntax and vocabulary of the target language will rely more heavily upon the compensatory use of context.
