To feed an indigent person for once is also an act of goodness. The Qur'an and the traditions emphasize its importance and induce the believers to practice it. But as long as the person remains indigent his needs would always be there. It is the responsibility of the people and the State to help him come out of his poverty so that he could be a respectable member of society and lead a life of satisfaction: the Prophet (PBUH) said:
A man who strives to help the widows and the indigent persons is as good as a man who crusades in the path of Allah, or a man who prays during the night or fasts during the day.
The struggle for the widows and the indigent includes every effort to help their welfare in order to make them regain respectability in society. Imam Novi says:
The meaning of struggle is to find means for their livelihood and try to fulfill their needs.
The indigent persons are of two kinds - those who express their needs avowedly without any hesitation and ask for help; and those sense of self-respect restrains them from extending their hands.
People then asked who are the indigent persons. He answered: An indigent person is one who neither has so much that he could be free from the help of others, nor anybody knows his real state that offering or charity could be given to him.
