An alternative account

In what follows I will argue that the apparent constraints on the combinability of suffixes are not exclusively or primarily the result of affix-driven selectional restrictions of the kind Fabb (1988) proposes. It will be shown that, instead, the distribution of suffixes is often governed by base-driven selectional restrictions and general factors like blocking. Each group of suffixes as postulated by Fabb will be discussed in turn.
