bandwidth (n.)
An application in ACOUSTIC PHONETICS of a notion from acoustics, referring to an interval between two given limits within which a range of FREQUENCIES falls. Specifically, it is the interval, measured in hertz (Hz), within which half of a component’s acoustic energy occurs: for example, a FORMANT located at 1500 Hz with a bandwidth of 100 Hz would have most of its energy within the range of 1450 to 1550 Hz.
