Non-lexical fricatives

Having discussed the nine fricatives of English that are likely to be represented in a dictionary, we will now discuss other fricatives which are found more sporadically. They fall into three main sets: those fricatives which arise from sequences of other sounds and which have a set of alternatives which can be analyzed as a sequence; those which are regularly used in certain varieties of English in place of other sounds; and those which are the result of incomplete closure for plosives.
