With the death of this woman, one of the indigenous languages has disappeared from the South American continent.
Cristina Calderon, whose family announced her death on Wednesday at the age of 93, was the last person to master the Yamana language in the Yagan community in Chile, and worked to preserve her knowledge by creating a dictionary of the language with translations into Spanish, which prompted the Chilean government in 2009 to consider it A “living human treasure” due to its work in preserving a culture in danger of extinction, as learning this language stopped because it was considered “isolated” due to the difficulty of determining the origin of its words.
Grandma Cristina lived her last days in a simple house in Villa Ojeca, Chile, where she earned her living selling knitted socks and making traditional reed baskets and other handicrafts.
