Strong aspiration of /p, t, k/
In north Wales, strong aspiration (which sometimes approaches affrication) affects the voiceless plosives /p, t, k/, particularly in word-initial and word-final positions. This strong aspiration is exceptionally prominent in the north, but Parry (1999: 37–38) notes that throughout Wales each voiceless plosive “normally has strong aspiration in initial stressed position, and often finally before a pause”.
