Fluoro- and chlorosulfonic acids, HSO3F and HSO3Cl
Fluoro- and chlorosulfonic acids, HSO3F and HSO3Cl, are obtained as shown in reaction 15.91, and their structures are related to that of H2SO4 with one OH group replaced by F or Cl. Both are colourless liquids at 298 K, and fume in moist air; HSO3Cl reacts explosively with water. They are commercially available; HSO3F has wide applications in superacid systems and as a fluorinating agent, while HSO3Cl is used as a chlorosulfonating agent.
